Record rise in tax return submissions

The number of people submitting their self-assessment tax return online rose to 24,546 coming into 2016.

According to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), there was a 2.8% rise in people submitting their returns online from the previous year.

11,467 people sent off their tax return on New Year’s Day.

Data also showed that a 2,044 people choose to send their completed tax returns on Christmas Day– an increase of 13% from last year.

The deadline for submitting your self-assessment tax return online is 31 January 2016.

If you’re filing your return online for the first time, follow these steps:

  • check if you’re eligible to make a self-assessment tax return
  • know your ten-digit unique taxpayer reference
  • register to use HMRC online services
  • set up an online account
  • receive activation code via post
  • log on and activate your account within 28 days of receipt.

Ruth Owen, director general of personal tax at HMRC has urged people to submit their tax returns on time.

“Our advice is don’t leave it until it’s too late. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time and remember our online service is available with helpful advice and handy tips any time of the year.”
