HMRC has received over 54,800 claims from customers using a new online portal which allows workers to claim tax relief for working at home.
The portal, which was launched on 1 October, has been set up to process tax relief on additional expenses for employed workers who have been told to work from home by their employer to help stop the spread of COVID-19 virus.
From 6 April 2020, employers have been able to pay employees up to £6 a week tax-free to cover additional costs if they have had to work from home.
Employees who have not received the working from home expenses payment directly from their employer can apply to receive the tax relief from HMRC.
HMRC confirmed that the funds are available in full, even if an employee splits their time between the office and their home.
Karl Khan, HMRC’s interim director general of customer services, said:
“We want everyone to get the money that they are entitled to, so we’ve made the online service as easy to use as we can – it takes just a few minutes to make a claim.”
Employees working from home?
If you employees have been working at home due to the Pandemic, they can claim a taxable allowance for doing so.
Employees can claim £6 per week in taxable allowances for working from home for any of the 20/21 tax year, even if just one day.
The amount is refunded via their tax code, so it is easy to administer.
If your employee normally works from home, they can also claim easily for the 18/19 tax year too.
Follow the government microservice and get the allowance in minutes
